Service Upgrades & Underground Services in Prince George
Your electrical service is everything between BC Hydro's line and your panel: the service wires, the meter base and the main disconnect. If you're adding a suite, a shop, an EV charger or electric heat, the service is often what sets your limit.
We do overhead and underground services across Prince George and the rural areas around it, including long trench runs out to garages and shops. We handle the permit, the paperwork with BC Hydro and all the work in between.
What's included
- A load calculation to size the new service properly
- Permits through Technical Safety BC
- Coordination with BC Hydro for the application, disconnect and reconnect
- A new meter base, mast or underground conduit, depending on the job
- Trenching and conduit for underground runs to the house, garage or shop
- Final testing, cleanup and a walkthrough

Signs You Need a Service Upgrade
- 01
Your panel is maxed out
When the main breaker is the limit, a bigger panel on its own won't fix it.
- 02
You're adding a big new load
EV chargers, heat pumps, electric heat, hot tubs and suites can push past what an older service was built for.
- 03
An old or damaged meter base
Rust, damage or a mast pulling away from the house are signs the service needs work.
- 04
Lights dim when big things start
Noticeable dimming when the dryer or a heater kicks on can point to an undersized service.
- 05
You want power out to a shop or outbuilding
Running a feeder or a separate underground service to a detached building means planning the service as a whole.

FAQ
Service Upgrades & Underground Services questions
Don't see your question? Call us at (778) 764-2020.
What's the difference between overhead and underground service?
Overhead service comes in on wires from a pole to a mast on your house. Underground service runs in conduit buried in a trench. Underground takes more work to put in but keeps the wires away from trees, snow and ice.
Do I have to deal with BC Hydro myself?
No. We coordinate the application, the disconnect and the reconnect with BC Hydro. You might need to sign something, and we'll walk you through it.
How long does a service upgrade take?
Our part of the job moves quickly once it's scheduled, but BC Hydro's timing sets a lot of the pace. We'll give you a realistic timeline once we know the details.
Can you run power out to my shop or garage?
Yes. Whether it's a feeder from your house panel or a separate service, we'll plan the trench, the conduit and the panel at the other end so it's ready for what you want to run out there.
How much does a service upgrade cost?
It depends on the size of the service, overhead versus underground, and how far we're running. We look at the site first and give you an upfront price before anything starts.
