Panels & Power

Generator Hookups & Transfer Switches in Prince George

A winter outage is more than an inconvenience when the furnace, the well pump and the freezer all depend on power. A properly installed transfer switch or interlock lets you run the circuits that matter from a generator, safely and without a mess of extension cords.

We install portable generator hookups and standby systems for homes in Prince George and out on rural acreages. Everything is done with a permit, and it's set up so you can switch over in the dark without second-guessing yourself.

What's included

  • Help choosing which circuits to back up and how big a generator you need
  • A transfer switch or approved interlock installed at your panel
  • A proper generator inlet outside, so there are no cords through doors or windows
  • Permits through Technical Safety BC
  • A test run with your generator and a walkthrough of how to switch over
  • Clear labelling so anyone in the house can do it

Signs It's Time for Backup Power

  • 01

You've already sat through a long outage

If the last one left you cold or worried about the freezer, it's worth planning for the next one.

  • 02

You're on a well or a sump pump

No power often means no water, or no protection from a flooded basement.

  • 03

Someone in the house relies on medical equipment

Backup power can keep essential equipment running until the grid comes back.

  • 04

You own a generator but run it on extension cords

Cords through a window work in a pinch but can't run your furnace or well.

  • 05

You work from home or run a business from it

A few hours of downtime can cost you more than you'd think.

Seeing any of these? Call (778) 764-2020 and we'll tell you straight whether it can wait.

FAQ

Generator Hookups & Transfer Switches questions

Don't see your question? Call us at (778) 764-2020.

Can I just plug my generator into a dryer outlet?

No. Backfeeding a house through an outlet is against code and dangerous, because it can energize the lines outside and seriously hurt a lineworker. A transfer switch or interlock prevents that.

What's the difference between a transfer switch and an interlock?

Both make sure your house can't be connected to the grid and the generator at the same time. A transfer switch is a separate unit for selected circuits, while an interlock is a mechanical lock on your main panel. We'll tell you which one fits your panel and your budget.

Do I need a standby generator or will a portable one do?

A portable generator with a proper hookup covers the essentials for most homes. A standby generator starts on its own and can run more of the house. We'll talk through what you need to keep running and help you choose.

Do I need a permit to install a transfer switch?

Yes. Connecting a generator to your home's wiring needs a permit, and we handle it through Technical Safety BC.

How much does a generator hookup cost?

It depends on the setup you want and the panel you have. We take a look first and give you an upfront price before any work starts.
